The Vietnamese Women's Museum

This could be Beyonce' with baby Blue ⬇

The Vietnamese Woman's Museum was so packed full of interesting information.  Some amazing, some unbelievable and some just plain sad.  They talked about women's roles in the family and traditions in childbirth to women in war, all the way through to women's fashions in Vietnam throughout the years.

I think we fit in nicely......

Let me tell you about lacquered teeth....

Until the mid 20th Century men and women lacquered their teeth black with resin from a tree.  The Thai, Khang and Lu burned tree branches to extract resin which was collected on a piece of metal or in a bamboo tube.  Water was then added to make it sticky.  In the evening before going to bed 3 or 4 layers were applied to cleaned teeth.  Two or three days later the process was repeated to ensure the teeth were very black, then a criterion for freeman beauty.  Girls first lacquered their teeth at the age of 12 or 13.  Now, only a few elderly women have lacquered teeth.

I think we should bring back the practice..... it would make it so much less awkward when eating out on a date!

"Um.... you've got a piece of basil stuck in your teeth"
"I'm so glad you noticed."

But one of the highlights for me was this photo of a Vietnamese lady.  We all made comments....

"Wouldn't it be good to be able to sit like that."

"It doesn't matter how old the Vietnamese are, they all happily sit on the ground."

"She must have great eyesight still at her age to be doing needlework."

"Bless her, she's got her string of pearls on."

and..... Chris' game of 'find the googly eyes' in the traditional dresses....

Cause nothing says fashion like googly eyes!
