Tam Biêt Halong Bay

This was the lovely view out our cabin window in the morning.  Just lovely!

When we first got to our cabins, Jen and I noticed a mallet in the cupboard and we wondered what the hell that could be for, then Chris knocked on the door to ask the same question.  Something was clearly lost in translation.

This is our new best friend, Phúc.  He was the head waiter on the boat and he was "ON" all the time.  There was no off switch.  On the last day he came and had another little chat with us and overly caressed Chris. I was listening to him talking so I didn't paying too much attention to the hand firmly cupping Chris' shoulder and I surprisingly didn't even notice Marie's secret eyeball pointing code.  It wasn't until she discreetly pointed to the cuddling hand on shoulder that I took the photo...... talk about being (non)observant! Poor Chris probably endured the invasion of her space for a good 5 minutes.

So, it's 'tam biêt" to Halong Bay and all the gorgeous little fishing boats.

Tam Biêt to the Halong Baylanese (Marie's word) people who live in the area.   Our guide told us that the government want them to move back to the mainland and try all sorts of things to get them there, like telling them that they're polluting the water.  So they make them go back to the mainland and give them a grant to buy a house.  Accordingly to our guide, there are no jobs for them on the mainland because they are fishermen, so they use that money to buy a boat and go straight back to the bay.  It's difficult to understand how people + their kids and sometimes a dog can live in such a small space, but it's their home.
