Highlights of Ho Chi Minh City

The Ben Thahn Market was our first stop today.  It was decided and agreed that  we would go as early as possible to try and combat the stifling heat and the debilitating humidity.

These markets sell everything from fish and meat to fruit and veggies to clothes and bags to jewellery and watches to plastic, crayfish shaped jelly moulds.

Walking through the narrow passageways is like experiencing a reverse parting of the seas..... as you walk through the shop keepers appear out of nowhere and thrust items in front of you.

'What you looking for?'
'I make good price for you'
'Hello lady, you buy something'
'You have a look, free to look.
'Don't be lazy, be crazy'

It's funny, but the only lady we bought something from was the one that just chatted and didn't push us into buying anything. I'm not sure what type of people respond to such pushy tactics, but it seems to be a technique that they're not ready to give up.

We made a couple of small purchases and then once we were satisfied that we'd seen everything and that we couldn't possibly take the heat any longer, we hightailed it out of the there and into the closest air-conditioned building.

This is me being as hot as I can possibly be without passing out.

I think I want one of these as my personal carriage/bus...

And I think these bad boys should go on my feet...

This building is the Saigon Post Office.  It's a glorious old building that has been turned into a tourist free gift shop, but you can still buy stamps and I think you can still post your mail here as well.

And across the road is the Notre Dame Cathedral... Just one of many the many French influenced buildings in Saigon.
